Imperfection of Going ‘Green’
Hopefully by this time, most of us know and understand the importance of saving our planet, being ‘green’ and doing the best we can to recycle and all of the good things that we ‘should’ do.
I’m not perfect, you’re not perfect; we don’t always ‘do the right thing’. However, we can continue to educate ourselves and be aware of or be conscious of things especially when it relates to our health.
Stop complaining about what’s wrong and start making steps in a positive direction. Â Whether it’s using natural supplements for healing, organic cleaning products for our home, bringing our own bags to the grocery store or supporting local farmers who don’t use chemicals to grow our food.
Key words here are our food. Â It’s up to us to purchase wisely to create a higher demand for affordable organic foods in our stores so that we can provide good food for our families.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s)
Back in 1901, the Monsanto Company was founded by John Queeny, a veteran from the pharmaceutical industry. Â It began as a chemical company and has evolved to a publicly traded American multinational agrochemical and biotechnological corporation.
It has put farmers out of business and/or forced them to buy genetically modified (GMO) seeds.
Also, Monsanto is responsible for creating and selling growth hormones which are given to cows for the purpose of increased production equaling better profit.
Not only is this incredibly inhumane to cows but majority of Americans are still drinking and eating dairy products that contain growth hormones – and we wonder why girls are going through puberty sooner than ‘normal’.
Human Growth Hormone
As humans, we have our own natural growth hormone and sometimes doctors will prescribe Human Growth Hormone or HGH for people who have abnormally lower levels. Â It is believed to help regulate body composition, fluids, growth, metabolism and heart function.
My research on this subject tells me that excess intake of synthetic growth hormone may cause:
Hormone Imbalance including early menstruation
Acne
Mood Disorders
Joint Pain
Carpal Tunnel
Abnormal Growth
Cancer
Hyperglycemia
Do Your Research
There’s only so much I can tell you about this subject so I urge you, like I always do, to do your own research regarding GMO’s. Â There are a number of awesome films that touch on this subject which I absolutely love and appreciate which are: Â King Corn, Food Matters, Super Size Me, Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives, Food Inc., Food Choices & Food Matters.
Again I could go on because there’s so much more to this topic but let’s focus on how we can control what’s on our own plates.
Make Positive Changes
The quickest change you can begin making now (if you don’t already) is to purchase organic foods at your grocery store. As I’ve stated already, the more we buy organic, the more it becomes in demand that’s why you’ve seen more and more of it available.  Stores are also offering deals and slowly lowering their prices on such items.
Also, it’s super fun to visit your local farmer’s market. Â Most local farmers including the Amish in my neighborhood don’t pay to be ‘certified organic’ but if you talk with them, they will tell you whether or not they use chemicals to grow their food.
I have to tell you that it’s one of the best feelings to know who you’re buying from. Â It’s like the ‘pay it forward’ concept. Â Giving money back to your community is an amazing way to do that.
There are also many, many online (or better yet, in your community) organic seed suppliers/farmers. Â One in particular that I’ve recently come across is High Mowing Organic Seeds who’s motto is:
“We believe that resilient agriculture is the cornerstone of healthy people and communities, and that responsible seed production is, in turn, the cornerstone of successful agricultural systems….we are able to bring our farmers, gardeners, and growers of all kinds, seed which has been produced without the use of harmful synthetic chemicals .”
Community Garden
Using organic seeds is one of the crucial ways to protect our soil so that we may continue to have the best nutrients in the foods that we eat.
If you don’t have the land on your own property, there are many community gardens across the world.
Tower Garden
Even better yet, there is this really cool thing called a Tower Garden.  The tower garden allows you to grow herbs, vegetables and fruit without the mess and work of gardening.
With dimensions at 62 x 30 x 30 inches, you can easily store it on your porch, patio or even inside your house. Â It is made of high-quality, USDA-approved, UV-stabilized, food-grade plastic.
Please check out my friend’s  Facebook  posts which include photos  and videos  of her Tower Garden.  She uses it to grow her own organic food and it’s so easy!
Until then, be well always!
